My card for today was such a joy to make! I have to confess this is my first slim card ever and I totally understand now what all the hype is… Wow… It really is such a beautiful size to work with on card designs! I worked with Deco Foil and Spectrum Noir markers to create this botanical inspired card. More details below…

It’s Ok to Take a Break Botanical Card Tutorial

I started out by printing our new floral and sentiments on smooth medium weight white cardstock with a laser printer. The images are resizable so it’s easy to plan your design ahead. I set up all the images I want to use on a simple program such as Word and that way I can print everything on one same sheet. (This is my proven no waste printing technique.) The toner a laser printer works with will allow you to foil images on a laminator. I used a Mini Minc to foil the stamps with Gold Deco Foil (which is my favorite foil to use with this alcohol marker coloring). Nevertheless, any laminator will work for the task (even THIS ONE).

I used Spectrum Noir alcohol markers to color this hand illustrated digi. I used MG3, PP3, PP2, PP1 for the flower and AG1. AG2, AG3, AG4 for the leaves. I also used GY1 for the dark yellow accents. I used clean strokes to add shadows to the petals and leaves trying not to blend the darkest hue all the way and keeping a few areas white or nearly white to add light to the coloring. By the way, the Deco Foil won’t damage your marker tip if it’s been foiled and transferred on toner. In fact it acts as a resist when using watercoloring or other water activating media. If you notice that you’ve stained the foil color with during your coloring simply use a cotton swab and a bit of alcohol to clean off any staining. To finish off the flowers I used a Sharpie acrylic paint marker to add white splatters and added some Crystalline Drops to the petals and leaves.

This 8.5″ x 3.5″ slim card base was cut from GK Premium Cardstock in Grass Green. For the card background I printed a sheet from our new Botanical Dream Patterned Papers. This one sheet comes with florals on top, framing this fun grid notebook pattern which allowed me to layer the colored image easily. I used Sticky Dots sheets to adhere the patterned paper and GK Foam Tape to attach the foiled flower. Love the layers and dimension this created for the florals!

For the sentiment I decided to go for this sweet “It’s ok to take a break” phrase which was also printed in toner and foiled with Gold Deco Foil. I used a discontinued MFT Die-namics mini notebook page die to cut it and attached it to the bottom of the slim card using Foam Adhesive Sheets, which adds just the perfect amount of dimension. The sentiment, florals and background are at different levels balancing each other on the final card design. And because there can never be enough bling and shimmer I finished off the card with a few iridescent sequins I attached using Ultra Bond Liquid Adhesive! Oh, and of course I ended up rounding all 4 corners of the slim card with a corner punch.
