Interactive Butterfly Bible Journaling Page with Digi Stamps & Journaling Cards

I’m so happy to have the chance to share my first Bible Journaling page of the year with you. I’m thankful to finally had had the chance to sit -or stand up actually- and journal this beautiful verse and chapter.

Creating a Large Interactive Butterfly

I love adding transparencies to all my projects and I had been planning on adding a bold element to my Bible for the longest time. This page is actually interactive. The butterfly actually flips open and the journaling card is adhered to the bible spine and moves together with the pages. I think this is a great idea for those who want to add large art to your page but don’t want to cover the words. This butterfly also works great for covering any personal meditation you want to handwrite on your bible margin.

I printed this butterfly on medium weight vellum using a regular inkjet printer. Using this kind of printer will allow you to heat emboss the image. The ink usually takes a few seconds to dry completely so there is a little bit of open time to add some embossing powder on top of the butterfly to then set it with a heat tool. To add color to the butterfly I used alcohol markers creating a gradient effect and since markers usually leave a streak on vellum, I used a little alcohol to blend and smooth out the colors.

Once I fussy cut the butterfly I cut a piece of vellum that I folded in half to create a hinge, which allows the image to open / fly on the page back and forth. Really cute. I added a strip of washi along the edge of the page to conceal and strengthen the spot to which I adhered the butterfly. I ended up adding the same washi on the journaling page which tied it all together.

My Technique for Backgrounds that don’t cover the Words

For the background I used 2 stencils from The Crafter’s Workshop, a bit of their heavy body paints and lots of Distress Oxide inks. But of course, for a page to be able to hold all these media it needs to be prepped first. I used a coat of Clear Gesso Matte, also from TCW, lightly heat set it and started working on my background from there. I am very careful when I’m using acrylic paints and I try to use it mostly on the margin to avoid covering any words. For the rest of the page I try to use transparent media like watercolor or water reactive inks. So far this is my go-to technique and I’m always able to read my Bible no matter how much I add to the page.

Although I had an entire blank page on the other side of this spread I thought a journaling card with the verse I was journaling would be more than enough (at least for now) to finish off this spread. This journaling card ended up being the base of the entire page, from colors to textures and much more.

The Inspiration behind this Page

Sometimes the hardest part of Bible Journaling and journaling in general is knowing where to start. I had so many verses written down from our church’s sermons but this journaling card from Prima Marketing was what gave me the inspiration for this page. Psalm 91 is so meaningful to all of us who believe without a shadow of doubt in God’s protection and care for His children. Having had a very difficult series of experiences in a very violent city with high rates of criminality, this chapter has always meant a lot to us as a family. My mom always prays and meditates on this chapter and I am happy that I was able to stop my hectic routine to meditate in the truth of this verse.

So, the reality is that when you are planning or trying to journal on your Bible, every element around you can be an inspiration and can spark something in your heart. That’s why I feel Bible Journaling kits are important for the process especially if just like me you are discovering this new and beautiful journey. This journaling card was sent to me by my IG best friend Laurie from @scrapwithlaurie and it came together with all sorts of beautiful goodies.
